Accepted into Google Summer of Code 2013!

The results are finally out. I have been accepted into Google Summer of Code 2013! It is an annual global program organized and sponsored by Google where participants spend 3 months during the summer to write code for open source projects.

I will be working on an interactive flood simulator with Iowa Flood Center. It will be a web-based augmented reality application using HTML5 technologies: WebRTC for streaming of webcam to the web browser, Three.js/WebGL for rendering, JSARToolKit/js-aruco for tracking, along with many other Javascript libraries for sure. My mentor is Prof. Ibrahim Demir from the University of Iowa.

This is the proposed summary for the project:

The aim of this project is to create a web-based augmented reality application using HTML5 technologies for an interactive flood simulation. Users will place encoded paper markers on a board, each representing an object such as a house, car, bridge, levee, dam etc. A webcam is then used to detect and track these markers in real-time. 3D virtual objects will be overlaid on these markers on the screen. A height-map terrain can be loaded by the user to represent the actual terrain condition of a specific place and to provide more interesting structures for flooding to occur. Additional sculpting of the terrain is possible using special “sculpting markers” which can either bump or dent a terrain area. A rainfall event can then be initiated which will flood the area according to variables such as rainfall amount, drainage rate and evaporation rate. Other sources of water can be created by the user using markers which represent water sources, or by removing water-holding structures such as levees or dams. The flood simulation will interact with the 3D virtual objects in the scene.

I am super excited about the project and can’t wait to get started on it!

I am a Senior Technical Director with strong interests in both tech and art. My life evolves round VFX, photography, software engineering, tools programming and generally anything that looks / sounds cool.
I have done a variety of CG programming, including fluid sims, muscles, soft/rigid bodies, raytracing etc. These knowledge complement the visual works that I do as a TD in VFX.
I was interviewed by The Straits Times in May 2014 for my VFX work in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
