Wrote a MEL script that can generate low resolution proxies for a given skinned mesh. The proxies are generated based on the skeleton structure and will get you 90% of the way there. Some editing of the proxies' shape is preferable after that. These low resolution proxies are useful for previz or real-time animation playback in Maya's viewport.
